Denise Domergue is Founder and Creative Director of Made Out of What. A long career (1976-2014) as a conservator of contemporary art (Director, Conservation of Paintings, Ltd. and Fellow, American Institute for Conservation) aligned with her life-long interest in alternative approaches to creative pursuits. In 1984, she authored Artists Design Furniture (Abrams Books),was Los Angeles editor of Metropolitan Home Magazine (1989-1994), and has numerous research papers, catalog essays and magazine articles to her name. Since 2014, she has devoted her energies to researching,writing, editing, curating international exhibitions, and executive producing short documentary videos which can be found at the website: madeoutofwhat.com
This talk will focus on the explosion of creativity that is percolating up from all points on the globe in response to our planet’s largely human-caused existential emergency. It will showcase a diversity of ideas, solutions and innovations generated by practitioners of fine art, design, architecture and other diverse fields motivated by this pressing challenge. Their efforts are principally focused around ways to transform consumer and industrial waste from blight into beauty. They work to hasten the development of new paradigms of zero waste human habitation and the return to sustainable health of all life on earth. The presentation will celebrate timely human ingenuity.
