From time to time during the year, we offer Ruskin Art Club members, family, and friends opportunities to tour historic sites in the LA area, visit the studios of artists and crafts persons, and view rare art and book collections. These “behind the scenes” looks at the work of local artists, crafts persons, curators, scholars and historic preservationists not only enrich our life together as a cultural association but are part of our mission to “see” the city and engage with the many artists who embody Ruskin’s vision of the integration of art and life.

Our first field trip this year will be to Ipekjian Custom Woodwork/Pasadena Woodworks, the studio of father/son craftsmen Jim and John Ipekjian. Ipekjian Custom Woodwork was founded in 1972 by Jim Ipekjian. Jim has been recognized by many as a leading authority on the furniture designed by noted California Arts and Crafts architects Greene and Greene (e.g., Gamble House, Pasadena). In addition to Arts and Crafts furniture design, he has designed in multiple styles, from early American, English and French furniture to contemporary furniture made from materials such as wood, metal, stone and glass. John Ipekjian, son of Jim, is a second-generation cabinet maker and partner in Ipekjian Custom Wooodwork. In addition to custom woodwork, John fabricates furniture and lighting of his own design.
